Condemned Weston Rhyn housing estate to be redeveloped
Monday 16th May 2011, 4:44PM BST.
A council estate in a village near Oswestry, which was condemned by residents because of the ‘awful’ living conditions, looks set to be redeveloped.
People on the Brookfield estate, in Weston Rhyn, say they are living in appalling conditions with some of the homes so damp they have rotting window frames and mould growing on the walls.
Many living in the 40 homes that make up the estate say they have been complaining for years about the problems.
But after the living conditions were highlighted by residents, council officials agreed to meet tenants.
And now Shropshire Council has said it is to redevelop the estate and will reveal details at a meeting in the village tonight.
Shropshire Council has asked Weston Rhyn Parish Council if it can send housing officers to its annual parish meeting, which starts at 6.30pm.
Parish council clerk, Roger Dyke, confirmed Shropshire Council was to redevelop the estate.
Tim Wood, who lives in one of the flats, spoke publicly about the flats having put up with the state of his home for four years.
He said:”Every windowsill is rotten because of the damp and the mould. You can just put your finger straight through the rotten wood. We have to continually wash away the black mould on the walls, it is absolutely disgusting.”
A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: “Angela French, housing services manager with Shropshire Council, will be attending tonight’s meeting of Weston Rhyn Parish Council to provide an update about plans to redevelop Brookfield Close and to move the tenants to suitable alternative accommodation.”

Would it not be wise to hand over council stock to a Housing association? the rent may well be more but at least the standard of the homes would be better.
