Pylon plans ‘could hit Shropshire tourism’
Saturday 14th May 2011, 1:27PM BST.
Shropshire’s tourism industry would be hit hard if plans which could see hundreds of pylons built in parts of the county and Mid Wales get the go-ahead, rural campaigners said today.
The Shropshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England said it was concerned about the impact the proposals could have on the county’s economy, which is boosted by millions of pounds from tourism each year.
And the branch today revealed it was opposed to the whole idea of overhead power lines being built, which is one of the proposals from National Grid.
The utility firm is currently carrying out consultation on plans to build a sub-station in either Abermule, near Newtown, or Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion, which could see large numbers of pylons built across parts of Shropshire and Mid Wales to carry the energy back to the National Grid.
National Grid has stressed that no decision has been made about whether the cables to connect to the sub-station would be overhead or underground.
But the CPRE Shropshire group administrator, Sarah Jameson, said: “CPRE Shropshire held an open meeting before its annual meeting on Thursday.”
She said: “It was decided unanimously at the meeting to oppose the whole concept of overhead lines across the county, rather than attempt to choose between alternative routes as suggested by the National Grid.”
A protest about the pylon and sub-station proposals is to take place in Cardiff on May 24, leaving the Shrewsbury Abbey car park at 8am at a cost of £11 per person. Contact (01547) 528546 or admin@cpreshropshire .org.uk before May 19.

Apart from the unsightly pylons, How about the unsightly wind generator spread over on top of beautiful hills and mountains.
Nuclear power stations are still the most efficient and environmentally friendly sollution to our energy needs

All going to have a very poor impact on the countryside .

“COULD” hit Shropshire Tourism? It’s a no-brainer.
Having travelled around the UK, I have spent the last six years holidaying in a cottage in the Llanfyllin/Welshpool area.
It’s very, VERY simple. Why did I choose the area? Stunning and unspoilt countryside. I go to the country to free myself from the urban environment NOT to see turbines and everything that goes with it.
Apparently, it’s goodbye to the scenic landscapes so it’s goodbye to me!
