Pub landlords in Shrewsbury could take extra security measures after several establishments became the target of intruders in a spate of pub burglaries.

The Golden Cross in Princess Street, The Vaults in Castle Gates, the Albion Inn at Castle Foregate and the Belle Vue Tavern in Belle Vue Road have all been hit since the start of May.

Bill Haynes, landlord of the Bulls Head in Castle Gates, said he believed a gang were targeting pubs.

He said he had spotted people acting suspiciously outside his premises in the middle of the night on several occasions in the past couple of weeks.

Mr Haynes said: “We have taken extra security measures. We fitted new locks and the alarm is set to a very fine pitch.

“We did this last week as a direct result of what we perceived to be a gang operating in the area.”

He said landlords in the town were concerned about where criminals might strike next.

“We are obviously worried. Nobody has the right to come into our premises to take money or goods or put us in fear of these actions.”

He said other pubs may follow The Bulls Head in improving their security.

The Golden Cross was targeted first on May 1, when a purse was stolen from a bag belonging to a member of staff at about 8pm.

On the following day, a window was forced at The Vaults and cash taken from fruit machine.

The third break in occurred at the Albion Inn overnight on Monday when cash was taken .

The final burglary happened at the Belle Vue Tavern on Wednesday when money was taken again.

DI Wagstaff said today: “We want pub landlords and their staff to be aware of what’s happened.”
