Prees Green residents in fight to get drivers to slow down
Friday 13th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Villagers have joined forces in a bid to stamp out the menace of speeding drivers by fighting for a cut in speed limits on a major north Shropshire road.
People in Prees Green, near Whitchurch, have signed a petition calling for speed limits to be slashed on the A49 following a number of accidents in the last six months.
About 300 people, including residents outside the village who regularly use the road, have signed the petition which has been submitted to Shropshire Council.
They want the speed limit through the village reduced from 50mph to 40mph. The current speed limit has an advisory 40mph around the bends.
They said another alternative would be to install a flashing 30mph limit sign, which they claim has worked well on the A41 at Sandford.
They are now calling on Shropshire Council to lower the speed limits to prevent any further deaths.
Barbara Rainford, of Prees Green, said highways officials from Shirehall had been carrying out resurfacing work on the A49 this week.
But a letter she has received from the council said that because of limited funding, any major road safety improvements were on hold.
She said: “It is a nightmare trying to get out of our drive. You take your life in your hands every time you go in or out.
“The accidents that have happened occurred during dry days, so the weather isn’t to blame, it’s the bends.
“We feel like we have done all we can to try and prevent any further accidents.
“I don’t know anyone in the village who hasn’t signed the petition and we have even had signatures from other people who use the road.”
