Murder appeal rejected
Friday 13th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
A factory worker from Shropshire who stabbed a friend to death in a “moment of madness” has lost an appeal against his 20-year minimum jail sentence.
Balraj Singh, of Weavers Rise, in Ketley Bank, Telford, was jailed for life at the Old Bailey in December last year after he was convicted of murdering his workmate, Gurmukh Chahal, 42.
Singh was working at a factory in West London, when he killed Mr Chahal.
Mr Justin Cole, for Singh, told London’s Appeal Court yesterday the defendant was living in “intolerable circumstances” at the time, working crushing 16-hour shifts and living above the factory in a cramped bedsit.
The court heard this was a “pressure cooker situation” in which a petty grievance got out of hand following a row over the parking of Singh’s car.
Singh, 44, appealed against the 20-year minimum sentence.
The court will give reasons for its decision at a later date.
