Villagers’ anger over Shropshire nad Mid Wales pylon plans
Wednesday 11th May 2011, 3:44PM BST.
More than 40 people packed out a village hall near Shrewsbury to vent their “anger” over controversial plans which could see hundreds of pylons built across Shropshire and Mid Wales.
Residents visited a letter-writing and feedback form event at Worthen Village Hall to respond to plans by ScottishPower and National Grid.
Worthen parish clerk Sarah Crossland said people turned out in their droves.
She said: “People turned up to write letters and lots of the kids were also colouring in posters which will be sent across as part of the consultation.
“The residents are not against renewable energy but are against the infrastructure.
“The biggest concerns are over health issues, the impact on the local economy and house prices.
“People are very angry that this could be imposed upon them and not just in our village but across the other nine routes.”
Another public meeting on the plans will be at Worthen Village Hall on May 20, with Ludlow MP Philip Dunne and Councillor Heather Kidd due to attend.
The news comes as Jim Read, who runs Newgate Clocks in Oswestry, today said plans for 800 wind turbines in Powys, to be connected to the National Grid, will see about “3,000 giant lorries” travelling through Shropshire villages to transport equipment.
Members of Minsterley Parish Council also strongly opposed the plans after a meeting last night.
Ian Hutchinson, the clerk, who also represents Montford Parish Council, said the local authority’s annual general meeting on Tuesday at Montford Parish Hall at 8pm will focus on the “Montford Against Pylons” campaign.
