Telford young people’s group in redundancy talks
Tuesday 10th May 2011, 10:27AM BST.
Council chiefs have begun talks with staff at three offices of a young people’s help group in Telford and Wrekin over proposed redundancies.
Consultation began yesterday with staff at the Connexions bases in Telford, Wellington and Newport.
Job losses at the offices are part of a major restructuring of Telford & Wrekin Council which began earlier this year.
Council bosses said they had already approved just under 100 voluntary redundancies since the turn of the year but a total of 530 posts are expected to go between now and April next year.
The council has blamed cuts totalling £25 million, which had been forced on them by the Government over the next four years, for the job losses.
The council said it cannot make the savings it has to – £13.6 million of which will have to be made next year alone – without reducing the number of staff it employs.
Connexions provides advice and guidance on a range of issues for young people aged 13 to19.
Telford & Wrekin Council chief executive Victor Brownlees said today: “Following Thursday’s election, Telford & Wrekin Council has had a change of political administration and the ruling Labour group has indicated that they will introduce an emergency budget within the first 100 days of the new council.”

What a shame :( the people at Connexions are great. They kept me out of trouble when I was a teenager and helped me become a website designer. 10 years later I am still in the website business which I would never of thought of doing if it wasn’t for their help!

But of course it will all be different under Labour.
Asda will be given their money back, told to kiss and make up with Hark Apollo, all the redundant staff will be remployed and the number of Board positions on the council raised to the pre-Eade levels.
Oh, yes, and there will be a multi-million Pound refurb of the converted car park that is Malinslee House so that it can limp on for another few years.
I must get a big bowl of popcorn and watch how this pans out. Could be interesting.
