Shropshire MP wants GHB drug reclassified
Monday 9th May 2011, 11:30AM BST.
SHROPSHIRE MP Owen Paterson today urged the Government to reclassify the drug GHB after it was linked to two deaths in the county.
Northern Ireland Secretary Mr Paterson, who is MP for North Shropshire, said today he will contact Home Secretary Theresa May urging her to consider upgrading the drug from Class C to Class B.
The move comes after Mr Paterson met some of the county’s top police officers to discuss the problem.
Mr Paterson said: “I am told that the drug is extremely addictive and is being linked to two deaths in Oswestry, where it appears that there may be tens or even hundreds of people taking the drug on a regular basis.
“However, the drug is still classed only as Grade C.
“I congratulate West Mercia Police for taking this extremely seriously.”
West Mercia Police has urged the Government to look at the way the drug is viewed after Oswestry was officially recognised as having more users per head of population than anywhere else in Britain.
Mr Paterson met with Superintendent Peter Lightwood, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards, and Chief Inspectors David McWilliam and Martin Whitelegg at West Mercia’s divisional headquarters in Shrewsbury.
“We agreed that West Mercia Police will write to me and I will pass on the request to the Home Secretary. We will be urging her to consider reclassifying GHB from Grade C to Grade B.”
Last month police launched Operation Bubble, involving about 100 police officers. Teams of police raided eight homes, seven in Shropshire and made 13 arrests. These led to some people being cautioned and others being bailed while police made more inquiries.
The police operation was the culmination of up to six months’ work and was part of a much wider, community initiative to deal with the drug in Oswestry.
Members of Oswestry Pubwatch are due to discuss the problem at a meeting tomorrow. A health campaign has been launched.

Government has been feeding us rubbish about drugs for decades.
Sorry Mr Paterson, but maybe if you went and got qualified on the effects of harmful substances, or more efficiently, actually listened to the experts without threatening to sack them if they dont tow your party line then we might just start listening.
And stop using “linked” in your statements.
Those deaths were “linked” to the deceased being on heavy drinking binges. They were “linked” to certain pub and night club chains, they were “linked” to the age of the deceased we can go on and on…
Typical politician talking about something they know nothing about, and you wonder why the people of Britain dont believe a word that comes out of your mouths.

Well said!

Well, pointed out Andy, I too am getting fed up with “linked” or “may have been a contributing factor” The only reason these youngsters are dying is through misinformation. It is not surprising that the learned professors of the ACMD are leaving in droves when they are publicly lambasted by politicians for political gain. It is about time people realised that these deaths will continue until politicians stop burying their heads in the sand and allow the learned to inform and the population to make those informed decisions.

Surely it doesn’t matter what class they are, if the are illegal then the person in possession should be sent to prison for 20 years minimum. Lets clean the streets of these vile people. Dealers should be hanged, very simple stuff really.
You should read a little more “Squire” These substances are not illegal. They are controlled. Which means unless you have a government stamped licence then “apparently” you are not allowed to handle them!
Apologies, to clarify. Anyone handling these drugs or in possession without a licence should be hanged.

Perhaps we should clear the streets of the pious?

Given that you’re apparently some kind of expert in this field, I would be interested in hearing you opinion, since you seem to be somewhat happy to tear down other people’s.

Linked with two deaths? Let’s hope that they ban tobacco and alcohol products next then.
