Shirehall flag tribute to former Shrewsbury Mayor Eileen Sandford
Monday 9th May 2011, 8:00PM BST.
Shropshire’s county flag will fly at half-mast at the Shirehall on the day of former Mayor of Shrewsbury Eileen Sandford’s funeral.
Mrs Sandford, 88, who was made an MBE by the Queen in 2004, had recently been diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer. She died in hospital on Thursday.
Today Shropshire Council confirmed the county flag at the Shirehall would fly at half-mast on the day of her funeral. Details for the funeral have not yet been announced.
Major Adrian Coles, a former Shropshire county councillor, today also paid tribute to Mrs Sandford.
He said: “Mrs Sandford was a very outspoken person and she worked very hard for her area. She contributed a great deal to the people of Shrewsbury.”

Dont want to speak ill of the dead but the COUNTY council building flying it’s flag at half mast. Will thus happen for every ex mayor of the county?

I take your point Matt this does seem to be going a bit over the top and people may restrain their comments due to respect for this lady’s family.
Also the Star are overly picky about what they publish.
If a certain councillor (using this for further self promotion) felt she had helped him become a councillor and with some of his family problems then perhaps I am allowed to comment that this same councillor used his position to help another councillor colleague but that was unfortunately for us, at my family’s expense.
Eileen had some dated and impractical concepts of the NHS which she did not have a great deal of experience of, having left her partly completed training many, many years ago. When challenged on these ideals on the doorstep she replied that she had had stones thrown at her in her constituency. The relevance of this was difficult to ascertain but I got the distinct impression that she expected admiration and praise for apparently representing that particular area of Shrewsbury.
As I said before she put good effort into representing younger people and gained positive publicity for the town.
