Powys County Council in flexible work plan to save jobs
Monday 9th May 2011, 12:48PM BST.
Flexible working pattens are to be introduced for workers at Powys County Council, the biggest employer in Powys, in a bid to protect frontline services and jobs, it emerged today.
The changes are to be introduced later this year following consultation with staff.
It comes months after the authority announced plans to shed some of its 8,000-strong workforce between now and 2014 to help save £16 million.
Councillor Geraint Hopkins, the council’s cabinet member for local services, said: “Resources are under considerable pressure across the authority and we have to make the changes to maintain service delivery and where possible protect jobs.
“The changes mean that staff will have to be more flexible and deliver a wider range of services throughout the week.
“We appreciate that some of the changes, such as asking staff to work at weekends as standard, may be unpopular. But, the alternative is to cut services, which is unacceptable for the public, or reduce staff, which is equally unpalatable.
“Like many in the private sector we have to be adaptable if we are to maintain and enhance existing services, while protecting jobs during a very challenging economic climate.”
He said changes would concentrate activity on core services including refuse, recycling and collection, street cleansing, and grounds and highways maintenance.
“The changes will challenge some of the council’s traditional ways of working but we do need to modernise our services,” he added.
