Severn Valley railway welcomes more visitors
Monday 9th May 2011, 1:38PM BST.
Passenger numbers on Shropshire’s Severn Valley Railway are up again, after last year’s knock-back due to the recession.
The 16-mile Kidderminster to Bridgnorth steam heritage line carried 18,273 passengers during April, more than 4,000 above what had been predicted by bosses.
The figure represents an improvement of almost 28 per cent on this time in 2010, a year in which total visitor numbers ended up at 225,000, 23,000 down on 2009.
David Mee, SVR visitor services manager, said: “We’re not going to tempt fate by declaring we’re in the midst of a grand-scale recovery but there are certainly grounds for us to feel cautiously optimistic.”
The railway has also won the contract to assess the condition of British steam locomotive, Dunrobin, which is returning to the UK after more than 45 years.

Be fitting for the Severn Valley if the railway could ever be extended to Ironbridge!
