MP’s memorial call for Eileen Sandford
Saturday 7th May 2011, 7:00PM BST.
Shrewsbury’s MP today called for a permanent memorial to be commissioned following the death of a former Mayor of Shrewsbury who dedicated her life to serving people in the town.
Daniel Kawczynski MP said Eileen Sandford MBE, who died on Thursday at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, was a “unique” individual who fought fiercely for people in the Harlescott area of the town.
He is calling on Shrewsbury Town Council to plant a tree or commission a special plaque in her memory.
Mr Kawczynski said: “I am devastated to hear of her passing away. She has done so much for Shrewsbury over decades and she will be very sadly missed.
“I am going to be asking for the town council to commission a plaque for her or a form of long-term commemoration which could be the planting of a tree in the Quarry or something.
“I am suggesting this because of her unique contribution to the people of Harlescott and the extraordinary respect she had for the people of Harlescott and throughout Shrewsbury and Atcham.”
Mr Kawczynski said that when he learned that Mrs Sandford was ill he had invited her to join him at the House of Commons and enjoy dinner at the restaurant there, but she had not been able to go.
Mrs Sandford, who was 88, was made an MBE by the Queen in 2004. She had recently been diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.
The former nurse spent years living in Africa with her late husband Hugh and their family before moving back to the UK and later settling in Shropshire where she devoted her life towards serving the public.
She became mayor in 2003.
Mrs Sandford represented the Harlescott ward for many years as both a Shrewsbury and Atcham borough councillor and Shropshire County Council member.
Last year Mrs Sandford published her autobiography, Come on Eileen.
