Cash stolen in cricket club raid
Saturday 7th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Thieves have stolen hundreds of pounds from a Shropshire cricket club, some of which was supposed to be donated to charity.
The thieves forced their way into Lilleshall Cricket Club in Church Road before ransacking the building and stealing about £400.
The damage to the clubhouse, which was attacked some time between 9pm on Thursday and 7am yesterday, is estimated to be between £1,000 and £1,500.
The discovery was only made when staff turned up to open the club’s pre-school.
Club chairman Colin Wetherley-Mein today said: “We all just feel sick. We have 70 to 80 kids up here on a Monday and a lot of people use the club. It’s a community club.
“The people who work so hard here do not deserve this.”
He added some of the cash stolen was earmarked for Cancer Research UK and the charity Poppy Fields, which raises money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Denise Wakefield, spokeswoman for Telford police, said officers were now investigating the break-in and appealed for information.
She said: “If you heard or saw anything suspicious, or have any information that could help us with our inquiries, please come forward.”
Telford Police can be contacted on 0300 333 3000.
