Three taken to hospital after M54 crash
Friday 6th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Two men were taken to hospital after being cut from the wreckage of a car which was involved in a collision with a van on the M54 near Telford. The van driver also needed hospital treatment.
The collision happened last night and left two lanes of the motorway closed for almost an hour and a half.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before 11.30pm and 20 firefighters from Wellington, Telford and Albrighton were sent to the scene on the eastbound carriageway between junction five for Telford Central, and junction four at Telford South.
Watch manager Wes Shutt, of Wellington Fire Station, said: “We arrived to find the car, a BMW, on the hard shoulder, up against railings, and the van further down the road.
“One man was in the driving seat of the BMW, another was in the front passenger seat and we freed them from the car by cutting off the roof and lifting them clear on spinal boards.”
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill said: “There were two men, both believed to be in their 40s, in the car and they were complaining of back pain.
“The roof was taken off and the men were immobilised using neck collars and spinal boards before being lifted clear.
“Ambulances took one of the men to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton and the other to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.
“The man in the van, who was also apparently in his 40s, had minor facial injuries and was taken in a rapid response vehicle to the Princess Royal.”
Highways Agency spokes-man Mark Powell said two lanes of the motorway were closed off and were not fully reopened until 12.50am.
