Letter: March of the major retailer goes on and on
Friday 6th May 2011, 12:41PM BST.
From time to time we read letters and opinions concerning the proposed opening of another chain supermarket somewhere in our region.
It seems the march of the major retailer goes on and on. As a somewhat regular business visitor to the USA I can report that the picture is somewhat similar over there but the pattern is interestingly more progressed.
If you want an educated insight into the impact of the retail giants, please do take the time to read The Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman and then decide for yourself.

I have read the book and to call it an educated insight is a little generous.
We all have our views on any given subject be it politics, social issues, education,… and will draw conclusions based on those views – Mr Fishman does the same. He supports his arguments with statistics and facts that are available to do so and conveniently ignores anything that might contradict his conclusions.
He is not unlike the average spin doctor politician.
Middle America benefits hugely from the Wal Mart effect and chooses to be blind to the bigger picture. This is a tough hurdle to get over both in the US and worldwide.

progress wont stop——-thats why we have electricity ect what gets me is–they wont open metro or express in rural areas where a trip to the shop is a long journey and costs half as much again when one buys it
