Arson at derelict Telford homes
Friday 6th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Four derelict homes in Shropshire have been bulldozed after a suspected arson blaze ripped through the buildings.
A fire broke out in the bedroom of a house in Wildwood in Woodside, Telford, yesterday which spread to three adjoining properties.
Sixteen firefighters from Tweedale and Telford spent about four hours tackling the blaze, which started at about 12.40pm.
Tim Hughes, watch manager at Tweedale Fire Station, said he ordered the homes to be demolished after the blaze.
The homes were due to be flattened as part of regeneration works in the area, but Mr Hughes said for safety reasons they needed to be bulldozed immediately.
“On arrival there was an obvious fire in the bedroom at the end of the terrace which spread to the roof,” said Mr Hughes.
“We fought the fire from the outside with four main jets and we also gained access to the properties using breaking-in tools.
“But it was unsafe for crews to enter, so I requested a demolition team to pull them all down.
“The demolition team were already on site due to a regeneration programme.”
Anybody with any information about the incident is asked to call police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
