Concerns have been raised about Welshpool's new one-way system

Welshpool’s controversial one-way system will be reviewed by council chiefs and engineers after massive queues blighted Bank Holiday weekends.

Engineers from Powys County Council will meet with Welshpool Town Council to discuss what improvements can be made to the system to cut queues.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said queues on Good Friday, which stretched far out of town down the A483 bypass were a one-off.

But he admitted the system had not been working as well as hoped at busier times.

He said: “I am not convinced the traffic light sensors are working as they should be.

“On Good Friday, the reports I received were that the situation was terrible, but I am not blaming the one-way system for that day.

“I spoke to people who spent four hours in the car coming from Wolverhampton and people who took three hours travelling to Barmouth.

“I think Good Friday was just intense in every part of the country. But on other days the system has not been performing always as it should be. I have sent a list of things to the engineers and we will look at them in the coming days.”

Mr Robinson said he expected the problems to be ironed out over the next 12 months.

“I don’t expect it to be perfect instantly, but we are working on it,” he added.

Last month, it was revealed 50 motorists have been stopped for speeding or driving the wrong way along the new system and councillors revealed they had been verbally abused in the street by people angered by the system.

like i said more money spent on people reviewing something the public new that wouldent work. so why do councils waste money on meanless projects we should have someone over seeeing what these councils do as they seem not to be trusted with large amounts money.

I could be wrong, as I’m going on pieces I’ve picked up in comments on this site and bits I’ve picked up elsewhere, but… the money for the project was “donated” by a certain supermarket who desperately wanted to drive the thin end of their wedge into the town. Unfortunately, those on the receiving end of the cash injection did not look this particular gift horse in the mouth.

If there was better signposting for Dolgellau before the turning off the bypass for Salop Road, it wouldn’t be so bad. Since the bypass existed, people heading for the (Barmouth) coast should always have been going straight up, off at the Smithfield Roundabout then up Severn Street and through town, not along Salop Road. This was a problem before the one-way system came along. But we have these drongos doing 60mph and more along Salop Road, because they want to get there quicker. Good enough for them if this has slowed them down. And they’re the same ones who take chances getting onto the bypass off Salop Road on their way back to Brum. Dangerous idiots with no thought for other road users.

The Bank Holiday was not a one off. Have been travelling to Barmouth from Midlands for over 25 years on various days and have never experienced delays like it before since the introduction of the new one way system.
Blinkered councillors blinded by money. Lets hope you got your just desserts at the local elections

I live on Severn street and since the new oneway system has been in place the traffic on Severn st has been horrific. Constant stopping and starting , more pollution then ever and I cant hear the tv (unless I turn it up crazy loud)and we have to go to the back of the house for a conversation.

I have lived here for several years but that weekend was horrific. The only real profiteers that weekend were charlies and tesco. If the system doesn’t get reviewed quickly many local businesses will shut as people will bypass Welshpool or worse yet bypass Wales to an easier destination.
