Thousands turn out to mark Royal Wedding in style
Saturday 30th April 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Thousands of people partied in the streets across Shropshire and Mid Wales to celebrate the royal wedding in style.
Bunting, flags and even papier mache models of William and Kate were set up as part of major community celebrations held in towns and villages throughout the region and beyond.
In a throwback to parties of yesteryear, long tables and chairs were laid out for buffet meals as streets were closed off to dedicate the day to the happy couple.
About 100 people living in Havelock Road, Montague Place and Hawthorn Road in Belle Vue turned out for a street party.
Guests flocked to Hawthorn Road to enjoy a buffet meal at a traditional long table and entertainment in the form of games, a barbecue and live music were provided as the revelling continued into the night.
Residents had spent the previous night decorating the street with bunting and painting pebbles red, white and blue, while everyone in the street also made sandwiches and cakes and provided coloured flowers from their gardens to decorate tables.
Emma Croall, one of the people who attended the party, said: “We held a street decorating session the night before and the setting up continued from 9am yesterday morning.”
She added: “It was such a community effort by everybody.
“One lady made lifesize papier mache models of William and Kate and lots of banners went up too. A raffle was also held for the Red Cross which raised £200, and a group of teenage girls did face and nail painting to raise cash for the charity, too.
It was time to party in Onibury when residents turned out in force for a party and disco at the village hall. Locals were already in a mood to celebrate after their under-threat primary school was given a temporary reprieve from closure by Shropshire Council bosses earlier this week — and people turned out in numbers for a community celebration topped off by a late-night fireworks display.
Laura Watton, a member of the Onny Action Group which teamed up with village hall committee members to organise the event, said it was “lovely”. She said: “I have never seen a major royal wedding before but it was great. Everyone watched that wedding yesterday and it is all anyone was talking about — it was lovely.”
Other activities included fun games, a barbecue and bouncy castle.
One royal wedding party came to a halt shortly after the royal kiss when the host had to rush off to deliver an unexpected arrival.
John Edwards, of Pulverbatch, delivered the bull calf, aptly named Wills, while his wife Hannah and guests sat down to a royal-themed lunch.
Mr Edwards said: “I got a phone call to say a calf was on its way just as I finished cooking the meat for lunch. Luckily it was a smooth birth and I managed to sit down in time for dessert.
