Green campaigners in Shrewsbury today announced they will launch a cash appeal to help them fight plans to build a controversial £60 million incinerator in the town.

The proposals for the burner at Battlefield were unanimously rejected by Shropshire Council’s strategic planning committee last year but Veolia has appealed and the case will be heard this September at Shirehall.

Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth today said incinerator campaigners Keith Kondakor and Tim Hill, of UK Without Incineration, would help it to deliver its case at the inquiry.

The group says it needs to raise at least £2,000 to help cover its costs and it is launching an appeal between 10am and 4pm next Saturday in The Square in Shrewsbury to drum up support.

Dave Green, who is managing the campaign for the group, said: There’s now a solid opposition to this proposal and we’re very hopeful of success in September, but there’s no room for complacency.”

As well as financial contributions Friends of the Earth is asking people to distribute leaflets, posters and petitions.
