Shropshire boy, 12, rescued from Welsh cliff face
Friday 29th April 2011, 6:00PM BST.
A schoolboy from Shropshire was rescued 80ft up a cliff face on the Welsh coast after climbing and getting stuck.
The 12-year-old boy, from Much Wenlock, was beach combing while on holiday in Marloes beach, Broadhaven, Pembrokeshire, yesterday, at about 2.12pm when he got stuck on a ledge.
He told coastguards he had been collecting bits of wood and nets from the beach when he saw some old rope 25 metres, about 80ft up the cliff.
He decided to climb up to it and realised he could not get down, getting stuck on a ledge where he was said to be safe but scared.
Milford Haven coastguards said the boy’s father rang 999. The Dale and Broadhaven coastguard rescue team found him and lowered him to the beach.
He was uninjured except for grazes to his legs.
Milford Haven Coastguard spokesman said: “Cliffs can present challenging conditions. This parent did exactly the right thing in calling for expert help from the coastguard.
“We lowered a man down the cliff to rescue him.
“There are some quite nasty cliffs in certain parts of the Pembrokeshire coast.
“We advise people not to climb them but if you do see anyone in trouble dial 999 and ask for the coastguard and we can get to them as soon as possible.”
