Doubts remain over RAF Cosford future

Staff at RAF Cosford were today no closer to learning whether their jobs were safe in the long term after Defence Secretary Liam Fox admitted the basing review was one of the most “difficult” tasks at hand.

The fates of airbases such as Cosford remain in limbo while decisions on their futures are still being discussed as part of the Ministry of Defence cuts.

It has been estimated that the livelihoods of tens of thousands of people in and around Shropshire depend on its continued operation.

During a Westminster lunch with the media, Mr Fox said: “The basing review is one of the most difficult things that we have done. It is a part of a very wide jigsaw. We have got our forces to bring home from Germany because it is a big cost saving in the longer-term, but has short term costs for doing so.

“When I am ready to announce which bases we will retain and which bases will have to close, I will do so in the House of Commons.”

RAF Cosford’s future was put in doubt last year after the contract to become the principal training centre for all three armed forces – and with it, the creation of at least 2,500 jobs – was awarded to RAF St Athan in South Wales.

But the Government later announced it was scrapping the move on cost grounds.

Cosford campaigners claimed victory after Mr Fox said the plans – which RAF St Athan won ahead of the Shropshire airbase – were no longer “affordable”.
