Appeal over Oswestry supermarket plans refusal
Thursday 28th April 2011, 11:18AM BST.
An Oswestry company has lodged a planning appeal against Shropshire Council’s refusal of its proposal to build a supermarket near the centre of town.
Car firm JT Hughes was one of a number of unsuccessful applicants keen to develop sites in Oswestry which were turned down last year by planners in favour of a bid by Liberty Mercian Group to build on the town’s Smithfield site.
Others applications thrown out included one by timber company Richard Burbidge, which wanted to relocate its business and develop its site in Whittington Road in conjunction with retail giant Tesco, and one to develop the Central Car Park in the town centre.
An informal hearing into JT Hughes’s appeal will be held at the Shirehall, Shrewsbury, on July 12 and 13.
The hearing will be overseen by an inspector, who will chair the meeting between JT Hughes’s representatives and Shropshire Council planning officers. It will be open to the public.
JT Hughes’s planning consultant, Les Stephan, said today: “It will be very informal and we are trying to keep the issues very narrow in terms of matters that will be discussed.”
The news comes as Shropshire Council was today due to meet to discuss details of a legal agreement tied up in the planning application granted for the town’s Smithfield livestock market.

Cheap milk, a happy clappy reduced section and a bunch of part-time low paid jobs…or a thriving heart-of-the-community high street. Councillors?

Though I do not want any of the supermarket developments for oswestry, out of the four I would of gone for this one, as they have been the most consitant, and the layout will not let them increase the size of the store, where as the others could.

I agree. Most consistent but also more humble and ready to listen to the needs of the people of Oswestry, rather than just ensuring a good deal for themselves. Liberty Mercian and the Town Council have short changed us with the Smithfield development plan. Promises were made that will not be kept. Even elected councillors conceded that and deferred the Smithfield plans to a further meeting where the benefits to us Oswestrians must be better defined before contract is signed. Good luck J.T.Hughes with your appeal.
