Telford businesses ‘will feel loss of UK Snooker Championship’
Wednesday 27th April 2011, 4:11PM BST.
Businesses in Telford will feel the pinch from a decision to move the prestigious UK Snooker Championship to York this year, it was claimed today.
World Snooker, the sport’s governing body, said the event would be returning to York’s Barbican Centre in December despite being held at The International Centre in Telford for the past four years.
Chris Jones, Shropshire Chamber of Commerce communications manager, said: “It will have a detrimental affect to businesses.
“To lose any national event is going to affect the local economy. It will have a knock-on effect for hotels, restaurants, car parks and will create a large hole in the Telford economy.”
Tom Gray, chief executive of The International Centre, added: “The loss of this event is disappointing for both The International Centre and to the wider area as we know there are a lot of keen snooker fans here in Shropshire.
“The decision to stage this year’s event at York is entirely that of the organisers, however I can assure you that we did everything within our power to try and win this event for 2011.”
World Snooker said it was right to return to the York venue after problems which led to them leaving the venue had been resolved.
“The decision is in no way a bad reflection on Telford,” said World Snooker spokes-man Ivan Hirchowitz.
