CIVIC LEADERS in Welshpool are being abused in the street and in the council’s offices by people angry over changes to the town’s road system, it emerged today.

Welshpool Town Council wants the verbal abuse to stop and will meet tomorrow night to discuss a way forward.

It could include installing CCTV in the council’s offices.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said today councillors had become concerned about the amount of abuse they were having to face from members of the public.

He said: “We are a very open council here in Welshpool and always try our best to keep things that way.

“But recently councillors have become increasingly concerned about the abuse received from the public against town council staff, particularly on items over which the town council has little or no control.

“We always try and help anyone even if it’s not a town council responsibility. But recently we’ve had people coming into the council’s offices and being abusive and people have even been abusive to our councillors on the street.

“One of the issues with people has been the introduction of the town’s new one-way system but what a lot of people don’t realise is that it was never a town council scheme. Powys County Council introduced it and we just helped it come in.

“It’s a small minority of people that are abusive and I wouldn’t say it’s a major problem but it’s something which shouldn’t be allowed to happen.”

Mr Robinson said the matter of the abuse would be discussed at tomorrow’s town council meeting at 7pm.

“We will be discussing whether or not to install a CCTV system in the entrance to the town council’s offices and put up a sign in the office entrance saying that abuse, whether physical of verbal, is not acceptable,” he said.

“We will also be deciding whether or not we should introduce a policy whereby any person who is offensive is not dealt with and they will be asked to leave and come back another time.”

Ignorant but not surprising. It’s made Welshpool Town look like a theme park and the theme is Tesco’s profit margin.

Agreed. You only have to sit in the traffic jams through Newtown for up to 40 minutes to drink at the font of the Tesco profit machine.

Oh I see waste more tax payers money on cctv??. The issue hear is the one way system WHY? and the building of Tesco WHY? both will have a massive affect on this small market Town, and the Councillors have either ignored this or are ignorant to it.
Many of the small shops will go as will ALL the other fuel stations in the town , these people whos businesses will be destroyed and gone within the next 12 months or so can blame the group of Councillors for destroying their lively hoods we have to have competition but not one small business in welshpool could compete against Tesco. VOters in local elections need to remove the Councillors by voting them out or may I suggest as many independents stand as possible, if they wish to remain as Councillors make them work for it and educate them that they need to learn to listen.

May be they should take a step back and ask themselves why is this happening may be these questions?

1,People not in favour of Tesco coming to the outskirts of the town?
    BUT YOU LET IT ?
2 TEsco will kill the town and shops will close?
    BUT YOU LET IT ?
    3. A road system that most where against?
    BUT YOU LET IT ?
4, Tesco stopping build of retail units ?
    BUT YOU LET IT ?

Now you see why this is happening?

Or they could just scrap the one way system? Abuse over! The traffic on Good Friday was 2 miles long and hardly moving, until we got through the traffic lights in the high st and then it was fine! It makes no sense. Why force everyone the same way?

I think it’s deplorable that people who seek public office and make decisions affecting the public might actually have to meet up with the people who are affected detrimentally. They should only have to meet up with people who have felt beneficial effects from their decision making & to be congratulated in the streets with ticker tape parades.

About time – THEY have destroyed the town and its perfectly acceptable that THEY should take some consequences for their spineless and pitiful actions. A few blunt words is all the price they will have to pay while others will lose their businesses.

Something had to be done in Welshpool but they have made an absolute “pig`s ear ” of it , I think the person employed to design it was the same one who merged the A 483 and A5 South of Chirk into a single carriageway road making it one of the most dangerous in the area. Whilst it would be far from a complete amswer a temporary solution mght be to direct all through traffic heading in the Dolgellau direction along the bye pass and up Severn Road [ with a lot more enforcement of parking limitations than at the moment ], as in my experience the main problem is traffic comoing up past the Spar is almost invariably trying to cross the stream from Brook St heading for Berriew Rd leading to total chaos.
