Shrewsbury Sunday game called off after referee abused
Tuesday 26th April 2011, 11:25AM BST.
A Sunday league football match had to be abandoned in Shropshire when five players from the same team were sent off for abusing the referee after he awarded a penalty to the other team.
Coton Rovers were left with just six players after the decision to point to the spot in their game against Anchor Inn at Shrewsbury Sports Village in Sundorne.
The match was finely poised at 2-2 with just over 15 minutes left on the clock.
Shrewsbury Sunday League (SSL) officials today branded the attitude of the Coton players “appalling” and said a report would be filed by the referee to the Shropshire FA.
Under league rules a match must be abandoned if a team has less than seven players on the field.
Dave Sandles, secretary of the SSL said: “The game was abandoned due to the Coton Rovers players not being able to take a decision from the referee after the goalkeeper brought down an Anchor player.
“The attitude of the Rovers players was appalling and this matter will be dealt with by the committee.”
Ciaran Hanna, referees appointment secretary for the league, today said: “It doesn’t bode well for our league and it doesn’t bode well for our referees that serve us.”
Andrew Stout, secretary of Coton Rovers, said the club did not condone swearing or abuse towards referees.
