Newtown set for pylons plan exhibition

Hundreds of people are set to attend an exhibition in Newtown tomorrow to discuss plans for a power station and hundreds of pylons in Shropshire and Mid Wales.

The National Grid exhibition will be held at the Monty Club in Newtown between 2pm and 8pm.

Bosses have been holding consultation events across Shropshire and Mid Wales to discuss routes for a 400,000 volt cable linking windfarms in Powys to the grid for the last few weeks.

The cable will go along 46-metre high pylons or be routed underground.

The plans include a power station being built in either Abermule, near Newtown, or Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion. A total of 48 public exhibitions are being held up until May, which will also include one at Llanfechain village Hall, near Oswestry on Thursday.

Councillor Joy Jones, the mayor of Newtown, urged as many people to attend as possible. “These proposals will be a major blight on the landscape, environment and people’s lives” she said.

“People need to come and find out what is going on and make their views know before it’s too late.

“We need as many people as possible to attend this exhibition and I really hope the Newtown exhibition gets as much support as possible.

“This is something that will ultimately affect the whole area and we need to stop it.”

Councillor Jones said she also feared the proposals would make Newtown’s traffic problem even worse.

She said: “Traffic through the town is already really bad and we just can’t afford to let it get any worse.

“Motorists already face queues and I dread to think what will happen with the amount of extra traffic that will be created by building a substation and pylons.”

Our roads are due a major revamp anyway. Elect the right assembly member that will ensure the correct infrasructure is in place before the project begins or elect the assembly member that is opposed to it all which will mean no change.
National grid will pick their prefered place for the hub at the end of the consultation period. Powys will give planning permission for the hub or if they don’t, national grid will appeal to the UK govt in London and they will grant it to meet their goals to reduce carbon emissions etc.

As for the power routes, UK Govt will give the green light to the route, National assembly for Wales do not have the powers devolved to stop this.
As many people as possible need to attend the consultations and learn more about the power routes, and then pick up a consultation pack and fill it in stating you strongly request that there are no pylons near dwellings and places of interest. There will also be new power routes from the wind farms to the hub. These might effect you.

It is too late to oppose the plans But you can have a say in routes and wether there are under ground cables or pylons.

Powys has a large number of wind farms, thanks to our former AM Glyn Davies opposing tan8 for 15 years which is why we need this new power route.
Had he swallowed his pride and worked with the goals of tan8, (reducing carbon emissions – a UK govt drive) he could have encouraged energy companies to invest in other forms of renewables in his constituency. but instead, he just sat back and did absolutely nothing while reaping the benefits for being elected.

Thanks to him doing nothing, we now have many wind farms. Thats what happens when you elect a moaner, they do not work for you, they just make matters worse!

Glyn and Russell George are organising a petition to be presented to WAG in June. Signing the petition will not help as WAG have no say in this.
Even if they did, a petition has to be scrutinized by the petition committee before anything can be done to present the petition to the debating chamber. This process takes several months.
Add in to the mix summer recess. AMs and MPs do not meet between July and October. By the time they get back into office in the autumn, National grid will have published their prefered route and applied to the UK govt dept and they will give the project the green light.

Act with your head. Following Glyn and Russells lead will only give the green light to pylons.
Attend the meetings, learn more for yourself and fill in the consultation packs and avoid putting down any NIMBY scare tactic as do not carry weight. Moaning and doing nothing is not an option.

And please ensure you vote for the correct assembly member on May 5th. Elect the wrong one will have devastating effects for us all.

Face facts, this is a fait accompli! The only decision to be made is the route of the power lines and the location of the sub station….NOT power station! (Sloppy reporting!).

The protesting web sites are both amature and sensationalist clearly designed to instill fear rather than provide facts.

The sabre rattling by MP’s & local memebers is a pointless exercise…a band wagon jumped upon to gain public support!

Get a grip…it’s not the end of the world!

    well said AJ.

People have the chance to request underground cables on the consultation packs. The whole thing is being badly managed by the protest groups, the local media, the MP and his wannabe assembly sidekick. They’ve already lost my votes.
Fighting this issue on false facts will just give the green lights to pylons.

It gets better, the MP has organised a protest to the welsh assembly building! The welsh assembly have no powers devolved to do anything about it except discuss it over tea and welsh cakes! The decision will be made by the UK govt! of which our MP is a party member of! and they want to increase renewable energy projects!!! (hence the need for a hub and a new power route)
