Man flown to hospital after Bank holiday M54 crash
Tuesday 26th April 2011, 11:26AM BST.
A man was flown to hospital after a crash on the M54 motorway which caused miles of tailbacks and delays for Bank Holiday travellers.
Police were forced to close the motorway after the man’s car left the carriageway before coming to rest on the hard shoulder.
Drivers faced delays of about 90 minutes after the accident on the eastbound carriageway between junction two at Coven and junction three at Cosford.
The motorway was closed for about 40 minutes to allow the air ambulance to land at 3.05pm yesterday.
The car driver, who is in 40s, was flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with head injuries. He was in a critical condition in hospital today.
The crash created more than four miles of tailbacks towards Telford, adding an additional 90 minutes on to travellers’ journey times.
Sergeant Iain Williams of the Central Motorway Policing Group said: “The incident happened at about 3.10pm, on the eastbound carriageway about a mile before junction two.
“It was a single vehicle crash. Initially we believed it involved life-threatening injuries, but the driver is alive and well. We think he suffered from a medical condition but there was grave concern for his welfare at the time.”
He added: “We closed junction three of the M54 which caused about four miles of tailbacks from the incident. Because of the hot weather our main concern was to get the road open as quickly as we could and within about 40 minutes we had one lane running.”
Relatives who had been travelling with the injured man were taken to hospital by land ambulance.
Central Motorway Police and Highways Agency chiefs were at the scene for more than four hours.
