Rising costs see bus bosses put up fares
Saturday 23rd April 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Arriva bus passengers in the Shrewsbury area have been hit by a hike in fares with some charges rising by 30p following a review by transport chiefs.
Arriva Midlands has introduced revised fares, citing “increasing costs” as the spur for the inflation.
The new payment scheme, which has seen the withdrawal of the Shrewsbury Stop Hop Fare, came into force on Sunday.
An adult single journey flat fare of £1.80 and a child rate of £1.25 have been introduced in the Shrewsbury Local Saver Area, which will cover services including 1, 2, 3, 8, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26.
It will also apply to inter-urban services to Shawbury Turn, Four Crosses/Shelton Hospital, Weeping Cross, Featherbed Lane, Bayston Hill, Washford Road and Berwick Close.
Keith Myatt, communications manager for Arriva Midlands, said increases in adult single fares had been kept “as low as possible”.
He said: “We have tried hard to keep fare increases to a minimum. However we have reached the point where it is inevitable that we must pass on some of the additional costs to customers in order that the services remain sustainable.
“Increases in single fares have been kept as low as possible — 10p, 20p or 30p on some fares to help cover rising costs, while some single fares remain unchanged.
“Regular travellers can still benefit from our value for money Day, Weekly and Four- Weekly Savers which are fully transferable and can be used without restriction.
“Customers purchasing Four-Weekly Savers online save big time with a further reduction of 10 per cent. With the price of Arriva Saver tickets being ‘frozen’ there are huge savings in real terms.”
Fares have not been revised since October 2010.
