MP Owen Paterson to lobby for fairer Shropshire school funding

A Shropshire MP is to present a fresh bid for fairer funding for county schools to Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Long standing difficulties over the central government funding formula for schools in the county were aired at a meeting of education experts and North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson.

Mr Paterson said he had a “very positive” meeting with members of the Shropshire Schools Forum, Councillor Aggie Caesar Homden, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, and David Taylor, director for people’s services.

“I was pleased to hear that the Shropshire Forum have worked to design their own funding formula which responds directly to the particular needs of Shropshire schools,” said Mr Paterson today.

“They have come up with something that has 90 per cent approval from people in Shropshire and have been trying to get it through the Department of Education.

“It is all about localism and coming up with solutions to suit local circumstances — Shropshire has lots of small schools and is completely different from somewhere like Ealing so it’s important to have local decision making.”

He said he had agreed to write to Mr Gove, to present the forum’s ideas.

Councillor Caesar-Homden said Mr Paterson had been invited to meet them last week to discuss Government funding for education in Shropshire.
