Nesscliffe Hill fire warning

Firefighters are warning people using one of Shropshire’s country parks not to start fires or discard cigarettes after two blazes in two days. They say conditions are already tinder dry.

The conditions on Nesscliffe Hill have sparked fears of a major fire on the hill.

Woodland on Nesscliffe Hill was destroyed in a fire last night. It followed a similar fire on Monday evening.

A fire crew from Baschurch was called out to deal with the latest incident at 8.20pm yesterday.

Geoff Davies, watch manger for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We extinguished a fire in woodland that involved an area about 10 metres by 15 metres. There was a similar incident the day before and both are being looked at as being of doubtful origin.

“Nesscliffe Hill is a country park that is well used. There is good public access and a car park that means a lot of people are on the hill, especially in good weather.

“We would urge people not to light fires or use disposable barbecues while the weather is like it is. Conditions on the hill really are tinder dry at the moment.

“Please do not discard cigarettes. It is so easy for a cigarette that has not been extinguished properly to start a fire — there is a lot of undergrowth in the area and one discarded cigarette could lead to a major blaze.

“Nesscliffe Hill is not easy terrain on which to fight a fire and so the public should take steps to do whatever they can to prevent one starting in the first place.”

Firefighters returned to the scene this morning for checks.
