Shifnal church in ‘renew your vows’ royal wedding offer
Tuesday 19th April 2011, 12:49PM BST.
A Shropshire church is encouraging couples to renew their wedding vows – the evening before the royal couple make theirs in Westminster Abbey, as part of a week-long celebration.
On Thursday of next week and as part of their Royal Celebration, St Andrew’s Church, in Shifnal, is hoping to attract couples who would like to take part, wherever they were married.
And on Wednesday evening, there will also be a short, quiet service of reflection for anyone who simply wants to remember.
The Reverend Chris Thorpe said: “We very much hope to welcome couples who would like to make the Royal Wedding extra special for them as well at the renewal of vows service.
“While we are also very conscious that these occasions can also be difficult for many people who have perhaps lost someone or are going through difficult times. And that’s why we arranged the Wednesday Service of Remembrance to which all are very welcome.”
The evening services come in a week when the church will be filled with flowers, wedding gowns, royal memorabilia and an ongoing “street party”.
Lady-in-waiting to Princess Alexandra, Meriel Afia and Shropshire Star’s Royal Correspondent Shirley Tart, plan displays of their own royal occasions. Shirley has been to all royal weddings, jubilees and other state occasions since 1973 and has a unique collection reflecting those historic days. Both she and Meriel are members of St Andrew’s Church.
About 20 wedding gowns will be on show, ranging across 70 years from 1941.
The celebration begins on Wednesday from 2-4pm, the same time on Thursday, closed on Friday for the big day and from 3-5pm on April 30, to accommodate a real marriage. Visitors can catch up with the fun on May 1 and May 2, from 2-4pm.
