Motorbike riders airlifted after south Shropshire A49 crash

Two motorbike riders were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash which left the A49 closed for more than three hours.

A 56-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were riding a blue Suzuki motorbike which was involved in a smash with a silver Audi A4 estate at the Crossways junction in Church Stretton at about 2.10pm yesterday. The motorcycle was extensively damaged and ended up in a garden.

The man fractured his leg and arm and was flown to University Hospital North Staffordshire.

The woman, who was riding as a pillion passenger, suffered a fractured leg and pelvic injuries and was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Both are understood to be in a serious but stable condition.

The female driver of the Audi, who is in her 60s, was not injured in the crash.

The road remained closed until shortly after 5.40pm for investigations.

Constable Danny Yates, of West Mercia’s Force Operations Support Team, asked for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “It is believed the Audi had approached the junction from the BP services side of Crossways, while the motorcycle was travelling along the A49 itself.

“Could anyone who saw the crash or the car or motorcycle immediately beforehand please contact police on 0300 333 3000?”
