Faulty gas fire puts Lilleshall woman in hospital
Thursday 14th April 2011, 11:15AM BST.
A woman was taken to hospital after a faulty gas fire caused a blaze in the living room of a Shropshire home.
Firefighters rushed to the house in Church Road, Lilleshall, at about 8.30pm yesterday after the family reported the gas fire had ignited.
Crews cut off the gas supply to the house, which is occupied by five people, and extinguished the fire using a hose reel operated by two officers in breathing apparatus.
“The cause has been attributed to a faulty gas fire,” a Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.
“It was lit by the occupants but had a fault which caused the plastic fascia to ignite.
“They discovered the fire straight away and managed to get out of the house.
“There were smoke and fumes created and one person was taken to hospital as a precaution. The fire was confined to the fireplace and was quickly extinguished.
“There was a small amount of smoke damage.
“The house was fitted with smoke alarm that did operate, we remind people to always check their smoke alarms are operating.
“On this occasion had the occupants not been paying attention the alarms still would have alerted them.”
An appliance from Wellington, one from Newport and the incident commander from Shrewsbury attended.
