The country’s next big cricketing stars could emerge from Shropshire, according to former England captain and Ashes winning legend Andrew Flintoff.
The 33-year-old Lancastrian visited Shrewsbury School yesterday.
It is currently hosting the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy Course for children aged between five and 16.
Youngsters were given a chance to bowl against Flintoff as he passed on tips about all aspects of the game.
It was the first time “Freddie”, as he is known, visited the town. He said the facilities provided the perfect learning ground for budding cricketers.
“People pop up from all over now, it does not just have to be Yorkshire or Lancashire,” he said. “With these facilities there is no reason it can’t be about Shropshire cricket.”
Tom Tapp, 12, said: “The academy is really good and it has helped me to improve as an all-round cricketer.”
Michael Lambert, 23, who coaches cricket at Shrewsbury School, said: “I’ve met Freddie once before and he’s brilliant with the kids.”
Shrewsbury School will be running the next course from August 8 to 14.
