Body found in River Severn
Wednesday 13th April 2011, 11:10AM BST.
The body of a man has been found in a Shropshire river, police said today.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was spotted by a member of the public in the River Severn at Cressage, near Shrewsbury. The death is not being treated as “suspicious” by officers investigating at this stage.
Police today said it was believed the body was that of a man aged between 40 and 60 and they are accessing DNA and dental records in a bid to find who he was.
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said the body was retrieved from the river last week.
He said: “Police can confirm the body of a man was found in the River Severn by the bridge at Cressage at around 5.45pm on April 6.
“It was spotted by a member of the public who contacted police. It appears the body may have been in the river for several months.
“A post mortem has been held but the identity of the person and the cause of death are yet to be established. As such it’s being treated as an unexplained death but at this stage there is nothing to suggest it’s suspicious.”
Mr Ewels said the force had notified other forces with regard to long-term missing persons.
Coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, John Ellery, has been told and an inquest will be opened in due course.
