Telford teenager raped woman in broad daylight, court told

A Shropshire teenager grabbed a terrified woman from behind in broad daylight before forcing her into undergrowth and raping her, a court today heard.

Jamie Findlater is accused of subjecting the woman, who was walking home from work, to a terrifying seven-minute ordeal in woods near the A442 in Randlay, Telford.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard the 19-year-old then took four £10 notes from the victim, who is in her mid-20s, before casually giving her one back and telling her not to tell anyone about what had happened.

The attack on August 11, 2009, sparked a massive police manhunt for the attacker, who was dubbed the “Randlay Rapist”.

Findlater, of Doddington, Hollinswood, Telford, appeared at Shrewsbury for the start of a trial today.

He denies three charges of rape and one charge of robbery.

Mr Denis Desmond, prosecuting, said the victim was walking home from work at about 5.15pm.

He said: “She walked alone and thought it was safe to walk alone at that time of the afternoon. But she was wrong. She was grabbed from behind with hands over her face and her first reaction was it was a joke from a friend.

“The grip intensified and she panicked and started to scream. He demanded her to be quiet and said he wouldn’t hurt her but would if she was not quiet.”

The court heard she was knocked over, dragged through vegetation to a freight rail line before being raped.

“After the attack he demanded that she hand over four £10 notes,” Mr Desmond added.

“He then handed her back one and told her not to tell anyone what happened.”

The trial continues.
