Motorists still flouting Welshpool one-way system
Tuesday 12th April 2011, 1:39PM BST.
Motorists are continuing to misuse Welshpool’s one-way system by driving the wrong way. Drivers have now been warned that they face being stopped by police.
New signage has already been put up to stop motorists driving the wrong way but some are still failing to take heed of the new system.
Dyfed-Powys Police said officers were continuing to carry out regular patrols along the system.
A driver from Welshpool, who did not wish to be named, said she was lucky to escape a head-on collision yesterday.
She said: “I was driving up Broad Street when I saw this car coming down to meet me on my side of the road. It carried on and I ended up having to swerve to avoid an accident.
“I looked at the driver but I don’t think he had an idea what he was doing was wrong.”
Robert Robinson, Welshpool town clerk, said better signage had now been put up to make the new system clearer for motorists.
But he warned there could be some delays over the Easter holidays.
“Please be prepared for some delays at bank holiday peak times, we hope they will be minimal,” added Robinson.
“The one way system will be better but there will be some queuing at peak periods.”
Anyone experiencing problems with the one-way system or witnesses anyone misusing the system should call the town clerk’s office on (01938) 553142 or Welshpool police on 101 or 0845 3302000.
