Wheelie bin arson attacks in Telford

An arsonist sparked nine wheelie bin fires during a five-hour rampage in Telford, it was revealed today.

Fire chiefs believe one person started all of the blazes, which happened between 6pm and 11pm last night in Sutton Hill.

A spokesman for Tweedale Fire Station, which was called to all nine incidents, said the fire-starter had put lives at risk and branded the culprit an “idiot”.

He said: “We’ve had a very busy night and incidents like this stretch resources as at one stage there was ourselves, Telford and Wellington all out on calls last night.

“In view of last week, with the very sad fire deaths at Brookside, you would think that people would have more common sense – only an idiot would do something like this.

“There was one bin lit right outside the front door of a house and it was near a window, although fortunately there was no damage to the house.”

Police today confirmed they are hunting the arsonist, who set fire to bins in streets including Stanwyck, Singleton, Sunnymead and Southgate.

The Tweedale crew spent two hours helping firefighters from Wellington fight a gorse blaze in Pool Hill Road, Dawley, at 7.15pm last night. Telford Central fire station crews tackled two small rubbish fires in Hollinswood last night.
