Warning over Powys education redundancies
Friday 8th April 2011, 2:59PM BST.
Redundancies will be inevitable if plans to radically transform secondary education in Powys go ahead, council bosses said today.
But if changes are not made and things stay as they are 12 out of the county’s 13 schools will be in the red by 2014.
Powys County Council is holding consultation meetings at all secondary schools and Coleg Powys campuses. The plans could see some sixth forms close and some schools merged after the council’s board agreed to a shake-up of education.
John Evans, communications manager for Powys County Council, said today he could not put a figure on how many redundancies would have to be made as the exact nature of the shake-up was not yet known.
“The council is concerned about real risks to maintaining the high standards of education for all Powys learners as the impact of continuously low settlements from the Welsh Assembly over recent years bears directly on all educational services, including schools,” he said.
“There are further major concerns about the financial impact on schools that is the result of the year-on-year drop in pupil numbers. The council is planning for pupil numbers to drop by around 1,000 by 2015.
“It is the case that 12 out of the 13 secondary schools are projected to be in a budget deficit position by 2014.
“Any loss of staff in this process is regrettable but the stark reality is that the combination of poor financial settlements and falling pupil numbers makes this inevitable. Powys County Council will continue to do all it can to reduce the risks of compulsory redundancies,” he added.
