New chairman for Oswestry Chamber of Commerce

Oswestry’s troubled chamber of commerce has a new chairman who says it has a new direction with plenty of interest and enthusiasm to improve the town.

The chamber has been functioning with an interim management committee since its chairman, secretary and treasurer resigned in quick succession this year.

A new-look chamber has elected pharmacist Martin Anderson as chairman.

Wendy Unwin, from The Gates shop in Church Stre- et, is the new vice-chairman with Louise Fitton, from DRE and Co, as treasurer.

The group says it wants to plough forward with training and pressing for town improvement plans.

Mr Anderson, a leading member of an Oswestry anti supermarket campaign group, “I put myself forward because I heard the officers resigned.

“It is a completely new group with a lot to bring to the chamber.

“There is a new direction and there are plenty of things to do to improve the situation around Oswestry. It is daunting but it is nice to start with a clean slate.”

Committee member John Waine said it had been an excellent meeting.

The chamber held an emergency meeting in February to discuss the future after the former management committee had resigned over Shropshire Council’s decision to grant planning permission for a supermarket to be built on the town’s Smithfield Livestock market.
