Arrest over leukaemia death collection claims

Police have made an arrest after a series of complaints about a man claiming to be collecting money from businesses in Shropshire in connection with the death of a young boy from leukaemia.

Officers have been investigating a series of complaints relating to the allegations from a total of 30 shops and other businesses in the county and neighbouring Herefordshire – four in Oswestry, four in Ellesmere and 22 in Leominster.

Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said a 28-year-old from Shrewsbury was arrested by Staffordshire police in Cannock last night on suspicion of obtaining money from businesses through fraudulent claims concerning leukaemia victims.

He has been taken into custody at Shrewsbury police station and was today being questioned about a series of suspected frauds during March.

Mr Ewels said: “He has been arrested on suspicion of committing fraud by dishonestly obtaining services and also criminal damage.”
