Letter: Why move the Wellington community clock?

Letter: As a lifelong Wellingtonian I was very surprised and somewhat saddened to learn that Wellington Town Council has put forward a plan to remove the Wellington community clock from Market Square or to move it to one of two unsuitable and inappropriate sites.

This is totally the opposite of what the public voted for last year in a survey, when most voted for the clock to remain in its present location as it has become an iconic and valued addition to the Wellington townscape.

Will the council please explain the reasons for these proposals? I feel a full and open discussion would be of benefit as the council does not have the mandate for this action. It should not be done “behind closed doors”.

I completely agree – The Wellington Town Councillors have totally ignored the views of the people of Wellington. Don’t forget there is a town council election on May 5th and voters should make sure some of these ‘out of touch’ councillors are not re-elected! It will cost a lot of money to move the clock and will take the only important feature out of the Wellington Market Square!!

I agree with Vaperic. Perhaps it DID need to be moved, after all?

why move it havent these councillors ogt nowt else to do when im having my dinner break in subway i can see the time before i get back to go work i will miss it loads :(

town councillors should do proper jobs like getting other matters one first instead wasting time on what looks good.

why do we pay these people to do stupid little jobs like this.

I thought that the T and W Borough Council had a consultation survey on this issue just 6 months ago and the vast majority wanted it to stay in the Square. So much for consultation!!
