Latest Shropshire MPs’ expenses revealed

Shropshire and Mid Wales MPs claimed a total of £18,554.29 in expenses during November and December 2010, while more than £3 million was paid out nationally figures revealed today.

North Shropshire Conservative MP Owen Paterson claimed £1,774, Telford Labour member David Wright claimed £3,344 and Shrewsbury Conservative Daniel Kawczynski claimed £6,468.18.

Montgomeryshire Conservative MP Glyn Davies claimed £6,682.84 and Ludlow Conservative MP Philip Dunne claimed £284.59.

The figures listed Wrekin Conservative MP Mark Pritchard as claiming £0, but Mr Pritchard today claimed this was wrong and was yet another “mistake” made by the Independent Parliament Standards Authority (Ipsa).

“I have made claims for all legitimate expenses relating to my parliamentary and constituency work,” he added.

“I don’t believe that Parliament should be the preserve of millionaires who can afford to cover their own parliamentary expenses.”

The figures were revealed in the latest list of claims announced by Ipsa.

Claims rejected were also revealed and Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies fell foul of the tougher regime.

On November 1, Mr Davies claimed £10 for a congestion charge but was only paid £8. The same occurred on November 3, leaving Mr Davies £4 out of pocket.

Nationally, MPs were paid £3.2m in expenses from the final two months of 2010, Ipsa disclosed.

Another £9,998 worth of claims submitted by 44 MPs nationally were refused by the watchdog from the same period.

In total, 26,500 claims were submitted in November and December, but many may relate to expenditure in previous months.

Between last May – when Ipsa took over the administration of MPs’ expenses – and December, there were more than 72,000 claims totalling £9.98m.

The claims from November and December were down from the £3.6m paid out in September and October last year.
