Call to make public vote on Market Drayton troops’ honour

Calls have been made for a vote taking place tomorrow on whether to honour Shropshire-based soldiers with the freedom of Market Drayton to be made public.

Mark Whittle, a member of the town council, said he supported the idea to honour the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment with the freedom of the town following their return from Afghanistan this month.

But he claimed some of his colleagues felt the soldiers, who have just returned from a seven-month tour of Helmand Province, did not deserve the accolade.

The councillor said he was calling for the results of the vote to be made public as well as how councillors voted.

The town council’s community and governance committee will vote on the proposal tomorrow.

Councillor Whittle today urged people who support the idea to attend the meeting.

He said: “I was shocked and dismayed when I heard a couple of my fellow councillors say they felt the regiment did not deserve it. The town should know there has been some talk leading up to this meeting of some members not supporting this idea.

“I don’t want the soldiers to think that some or any of the councillors are against them because they have done such a lot of hard work out there in Afghanistan.

“They know we appreciate them because we are holding a homecoming parade in the town on Monday. Sadly there are some councillors, but not many, who don’t want the soldiers to have the freedom of the town.

“So I’m going to propose on the night that the vote is recorded so members cannot hide the way they voted because we are all supposed to be on the council to represent the town.”

Councillor Whittle said the chance to honour the regiment might not present itself again while it is based at Tern Hill.

He added: “I’m very hopeful it will go through at the meeting but we have to go through the proper procedures to get there.”

The meeting will be held in Market Drayton Town Hall in Frogmore Road from 7.30pm.

The Councillors who do not want to honour our troops should be named and shamed. Better still send them to fight the Taliban let’s see how quick they are then to dismiss such brave actions. Bravo to you Cllr Whittle!

Perhaps some Councillors have been given a negative impression of the regiment in some way, but they should be more generous. A regiment is a big outfit, these blokes have been to war and it’s not so easy for them to enjoy the accolades due to them in their own homeland. Honour them. They deserve it. And never forget – Market Drayton would be a damn sight poorer if the barracks closed and the army left.

What makes this regiment more worthy than all the others before them to be given this award?

Leaving aside the contentious issue of whether British troops should be in Afghanistan in the first place, I would be interested to see if Cllr Whittle has asked for votes on other issues that actually affect the people of Market Drayton to be made public.

I support and value our troops – that’s why I don’t think their lives should be sacrificed in the open air toilet of Afghanistan.

Hang on a minute…”the Irish Regiment”

Not anything to do with this county and their routes are in Ireland. We need a regiment that is English and orginates from this area. Just like the KSLI was. My grandad would be turning in his grave as a ex KSLI sergeant major if he knew we were giving the freedom of our market towns to a regiment that has no REAL links here.

It’s the MoD’s fault for dis-banding the regiments in the first place.

What about the local lads that want to sign up? They are not exactly going to want to join the irish regiment when they are not even irish…

Sorry it’s a crude comment, but one that many people and veterans do keep in their minds.

I don’t think we can assume that by not supporting the fereedom of the town that those opposed to it do not support our troops.

It might be that they feel that the idea of freedom of the town might be used in a negative way by those with jingoistic views for example.

Why should people be made to feel ashamed simply for voting as their conscience dictates? Surely those who should be ashamaed are those who allow themselves to be browbeaten into doing otherwise.
