War memorial plaques ‘stolen for scrap’
Monday 4th April 2011, 6:00PM BST.
Parishioners near Market Drayton have been left “devastated” by the theft of two war memorial plaques stolen from church grounds which they fear could be melted down by the thieves for their scrap value.
Members of St Peter’s Church, Broughton, found the bronze plaques missing at the weekend.
They remember loved ones who fought in both world wars.
The incident was reported last night to Staffordshire Police who have described the crime as “callous” and have launched an appeal for information.
Church warden Henry Butter said today: “We were devastated when we found out the two bronze memorial plaques had gone missing.
“They commemorate people fighting in World War One and Two and the cost to replace them will be massive.
“In the past we had another incident where a bronze sword had been stolen.”
Staffordshire Police spokesman Peter Bate said: “We were called last night when it was reported two bronze plaques had been stolen from the war memorial in the church grounds.
“One plaque had the names of people who fought in World War One and the other had the names of people in World War Two.
“It was presumed they had been stolen to be sold as scrap.
“This was a very callous crime and I urg e anyone with any information to call police on 0300 1234455 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
