Royal Irish return to Shropshire
Monday 4th April 2011, 11:17AM BST.
Irish eyes were smiling as about 180 Shropshire-based soldiers made an emotional return to the county from a seven-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment were reunited with loved ones as they returned to barracks in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, yesterday.
Amid emotional scenes, dozens of families were reunited on Mothering Sunday after spending many months apart anxiously waiting to see each other again.
The homecoming was tinged with sadness because the regiment lost three soldiers on the tour – Ranger Aaron McCormick, Ranger David Dalzell and Lance Corporal Stephen McKee.
About 400 troops have now returned to the base after leaving Helmand province.
The regiment is now to be honoured with two homecoming parades in the county.
