Police chase driver had drugs he planned to sell on

A 30-year-old man has been found guilty of dangerous driving, while in possession of drugs he intended to sell on, after being pursued by police across Shropshire.

Gareth Fischer, of Stourport-on-Severn, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday. He was caught after he overtook a police car in his VW Golf on a blind bend near Quatt in December 2009. A jury found Fischer guilty of dangerous driving, being concerned in the supply of drugs and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

He had denied all charges and has been released on bail for reports to be produced. Sentencing will take place on a date to be fixed.

The court heard Fischer was on the A442 at Quatt when his car crossed double white lines and overtook the unmarked police car.

Miss Jo Barker, prosecuting, said it was dark, there was no street lighting and the traffic was heavy. She added that conditions were wet, there was spray and the visibility was poor.

Fischer also crossed the white lines to overtake a BMW car, the court heard.

Miss Barker said officers followed him and on the A458 at Morville he was exceeding the speed limit and overtaking at high speed.

After being stopped near Shrewsbury Fischer was found to have traces of drugs and alcohol in his system.

Mr Delroy Henry, for Fischer, said his client was driving to Westbury to see his doctor. He was rushing to drop off items at his ex-girlfriend’s house before the surgery closed.
