Sadness at last sitting of Market Drayton Magistrates Court
Thursday 31st March 2011, 4:43PM BST.
Emotions were running high as more than 25 people turned out to see Market Drayton Magistrates Court sit for the last time.
The court is officially due to shut its doors tomorrow after being short-listed for closure as part of Government spending cuts.
Court staff, current and former magistrates, and representatives of the Crown Prosecution Service were among the people to turn out in court for the last sitting yesterday to hear speeches about the closure.
A few hiccups with finding enough magistrates for the court to be able to sit meant proceedings were delayed for nearly an hour.
Max Bennett, speaking yesterday on behalf of the CPS, said: “It is a sad day, but magistrates should be proud of what they have done.
“I have travelled around the country, but you have some of the finest legal advisers. I won’t forget Market Drayton court.”
The court, in Cheshire Street, typically sat twice a week. Its workload will now be sent to Shrewsbury.
