Shropshire medical practices in funding promise
Tuesday 29th March 2011, 3:17PM BST.
Two Shropshire medical practices have been promised funding for new premises – but Shrewsbury’s Riverside Medical Practice has missed out.
Officials at Shropshire County Primary Care Trust have agreed to pay for a new £1 million surgery in Cleobury Mortimer and for a major extension to develop teaching facilities at Worthen Medical Practice, near Shrewsbury.
But the campaign to relocate the Riverside Medical Practice from Smithfield Road, in Shrewsbury, to the town’s multi-million pound Barker Street development is now in limbo after missing out on funding.
All three proposals had been put forward to Shropshire County PCT as priority cases for funding after a number of applications were made from practices across the county. PCT bosses have stayed tight-lipped about the amount of cash being provided for the two developments.
Bosses at the Riverside have spent the past decade searching for a new site to relocate to from their existing cramped facilities. The plan to move to Barker St-reet was unveiled two years ago and contractors are now building the complex, which will also house a supermarket and apartments.
Confirming that the county PCT board has agreed to fund the redevelopment of Worthen Medical Practice and Cleobury Mortimer Medical Practice, Liz Welsh, of Shropshire County PCT, said: “The PCT also confirmed that it was not in a position to fund the redevelopment of Riverside Medical Practice in Shrewsbury, which was third on our priority list, at this time.”
No-one was available to comment at any of the three practices affected today. But patients’ groups in Worthen and Cleobury said they were delighted at the news.
