Row over Mid Wales windfarm power station sites
Tuesday 29th March 2011, 1:26PM BST.
Two potential sites in Mid Wales earmarked for a power station to link windfarms to the National Grid should never have been up for consideration, it has been claimed.
Councillor Russell George, of Newtown, said it was outrageous that sites in Abermule, near Newtown, and Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion, were being thought of as a potential substation location.
It comes as dozens of people visited a community centre near Cefn Coch yesterday as part of a series of public exhibitions being staged by National Grid and Scottish Power to find people’s views on the plans.
The National Grid has said the electricity infrastructure needs upgrading in Powys to cope with the number of windfarms being built in the area.
The 19-acre power station will collect energy from the windfarms and a 400,000 volt cable will deliver the power from the station into the national system.
The cable could take the form of overhead power lines, underground cables or a combination of the two.
Councillor George said: “The hub should not go in either location, the whole thing is outrageous and I will be fighting until the very end to stop this.
“Abermule is a thriving growing community and the Vyrnwy Valley is one of Montgomeryshire’s biggest assets. The politicians in Cardiff supporting this should be ashamed.”
But Dave Jones, a resident in Cefn Coch, who attended the public exhibition yesterday, said a power station needed to be built somewhere.
“I’m not against it coming here and I only live across the road,” he said.
But Greg Smith, of Pontrobert, near Meifod, said he was opposed to the plans.
He said: “Pylons as high as 48m will be coming through Meifod and even though they won’t directly affect me I still don’t want to see them on my daily travels.”
Villagers in Meifod are being urged to attend a public meeting tonight to discuss how the pylons will affect the village. It will be held at the Cobra Rugby Club, Meifod, at 7.30pm.

and for years we’ve had to listen to anti wind farm campaigners say that wind farms do not produce energy. Mid Wales, is at the front of being a renewable energy front runner. from here the possiblilties are endless. with the right provisions and with new incentives from the welsh assembly due to come into force, we can create renewable energy jobs. solar farms can now crop up, hydro, the list is endless.
Horray for change. I welcome it

Obviously you will not be living near the power lines and hub. Or if you do you are not concerned about the yet unproven health risks.
We will not be at the forefront of renewable energy but will be the laughing stock of Europe. Wind farms run at about 18-20% capacity and during their lifetime the carbon saved does not equate to the energy used to make them in the first place. Many European countries are cancelling their wind farm programs as a result.
Windfarms are not green energy – the only winners here are the developers who recieve massive subsidies from europe. The turbines are not built in this country and are imported from abroad….so no jobs there then. The local economy will be destroyed and house prices in the aea will crash throwing families into financial difficulty. Maybe bailiff companies will have jobs going!!!

Of course the developers and land owners will be using fair means and foul to push this through before the truth of the scale and unviability of windfarms are fully understood.
I do sense a bit of a sea-change despite the scare tactics of idealougues and not so subtle (but still effective marketing by the speculators). I heard a priceless phrase recently. These speculators are not building farms but farming subsidies. I would suggest that people inform themselves about the real facts of wind turbines……reduce the vast and undemocratic scale of the windfarms and there will be no need for the vast infrastucture.

Maybe there should be a nuclear power station out on the bay?
Better hope the winds don’t blow any radiation too far inland.

happy to breathe clean air. Funny how these politicians only chirp up when they is a general election coming up.

Cllr Russell George needs to realise that there aren’t many companies investing in his town at present. Infact the high street that he represents has shops closing all the time.
As soon as someone shows interest of investing in the area, they get run out of town. What message is this giving to others that might want to come here to set up shop?

We would welcome all who realise how these plans will effect them to visit our sites and show their support and we would also welcome all those who have not yet realised that even those not in the route corridors will be both directly and indirectly effected in a detrimental manner

The NIMBY’s are fighting there case using urban myths as scare tactics. If Glyn stood up in Westminster to raise these concerns, he would be laughed out of town and be made a bigger fool than Lembit Opik.
This is a classic case of the blind leading the blind.
The Government have a pledged to reduce carbon emissions and to generate 15% of our electricity by renewable energy by the year 2020. They hope this will create £100bn in outside investment and create half a million jobs connected to this industry in the UK. A step in the right direction, as we’re all aware the devistating effect carbon emissions are having on the world’s wildlife.
The BANANA brigade (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anyone) are fools to forget that this is what they voted for.
